Median Employee Age
What (Definition)
Median Age measures the Median of ages of all employees in the company. .
Why (Benefits)
Understanding the age mix of your employees is part of measuring diversity in your workforce.
In order to make sure that there is no bias based on age, in your recruitment process and in your performance evaluation process and other HR processes, you need to measure the age mix of your workforce.
How (Calculation?)
Formula
Age in Days = (Current Date – Employee Birth Date + 1)
Median Age = Median of Ages calculated for each employee
We have to calculate the Age first for each employee and then calculate median of the ages.
It is always recommended to have frequency distribution data in addition to the overall median.
Use Frequency distributions data
This is where we create bins or buckets or categories of age, and count frequency of occurrence of each bin. In our example, we can create bins based on years of age. Let’s take a look at this chart.
We are now displaying the number of employees in each bin. For example, there are 5 employees with ages between 20 and 30 years. This type of visualization helps understand the concentration of employees in age buckets. It also will show any outliers more clearly.
